Remembered by readers as the author of “Heartlines,” Carol Ankney was the long-time executive editor of the Sturgis Journal. “Heartlines” was Ankney’s weekly column during her 23-year tenure in the editorial department of the Journal. Ankney’s work during those years earned her more than 570 writing, editing and photography awards. Her family has compiled her writings to create this treasure of timeless stories, sure to inspire any reader.

Carol J. Ankney was born December 25, 1930, lived in Sidnaw, Michigan, until the age of ten, when her family moved to Branch County, MI. She moved to Burr Oak in 1944 and married Charles H. Ankney in 1949.
Carol served eighteen years on the Board of Education in Burr Oak, serving as president several terms. She was instrumental in obtaining a Federal Economic Development Grant for the school, the funding of which was later withdrawn. She fought the battle up to the General Accounting Office, which order the Commerce Department to return the funds. A new educational complex was then built at the school.
She was a longtime member of the Michigan Women’s Press Club and the National Federation of Press Women. She had earned over 570 writing, editing and photography awards, and had twice been named Sweepstakes winner in National Federation of Press Women competition. She had been Sweepstakes winner in the Michigan unit for 17 consecutive years. Many of her awards were earned in Associated Press and United Press International competition.
Her hobbies included reading, history and genealogy. She also held a lifetime interest in environmental issues.
Fondly remembered by readers as the author of “Heartlines,” Carol Ankney died November 14, 2001 in Sturgis, MI.
